Drunk driver crashes into RTI officers

Two traffic officers injured after bakkie smashes into their vehicle.

TWO KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers were seriously injured after a drunk driver slammed his bakkie into their car on the N2 on Saturday evening. The incident occurred near the KwaMashu off-ramp on the busy freeway in the northbound direction.

It’s believed the officers were helping a truck which had broken down on the side of the freeway.

The driver of the bakkie was taken to the Greenwood Park SAPS station and was charged before being taken to hospital.

“He was charged with reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence,” confirmed W/O Leon Audh, Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha, said reports indicate that the bakkie veered off the road and crashed into the traffic officers.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the two officers and the bakkie driver had sustained serious injuries. Paramedics stabilised the injured patients at the scene and then transported them to a hospital in Umhlanga,” he said.
