Man robbed of R43 000 outside bank on Broadway

Men armed with handguns rob 75-year-old outside Durban North bank.

DURBAN North police are looking for two men who stole R43 000 from a man outside a bank on Swapo (Broadway) Road recently. The 75-year-old was on his way to make the large cash deposit, when the men allegedly held him up. Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the local station, said police believe the elderly man was followed by the suspects.

“The elderly man was approached by two suspects who were armed with handguns. They ran up to him as he was approaching the bank and held him up. Thankfully he wasn’t harmed or injured in the robbery. The men then jumped into a getaway vehicle down the road.

“We have had cases in the past where criminals use spotters in banks, or criminals use informants who pass on information about large deposits being made. I urge residents and businesses to be vigilant at all times and where possible to transfer money electronically rather than depositing large sums of money at the bank,” he said.
