Umhlanga teens set to compete at national youth music comp
Three talented uMhlanga musicians are preparing to showcase their skills at the National Youth Music Competition in Stellenbosch.
SIBLINGS Weien Amy Luo (18) and her brother Xizhi Aiden Luo (15), and Aran Singh (18) are set to compete at the National Youth Music Competition (NYMC) in December.
The trio, all from uMhlanga, are among 28 selected contestants for this year’s competition in Stellenbosch.
In all, the competition will feature five musicians from KZN, including Weiry Yan (17) from Ballito and Yuba Weng (16) from Durban.
The Luos are both Crawford College International La Lucia learners while Singh is a learner at Reddam House Umhlanga.
The 42nd edition of the competition runs from December 1-5 and will feature a seven-member jury.

Each judge will listen to approximately 22 hours of music over the four rounds of the competition.
Another hour has been set aside for deliberations by the panel. Together, the total hours of adjudication will amount to more than six days.
The adjudicating panel will individually score the musicians, listening to more than a hundred works during the contest. The participants will each present a diverse repertoire of classical music.
The NYMC is, for the past 19 years, the only South African music competition where the six finalists compete for top honours with a professional philharmonic orchestra at a gala concert on Saturday, December 5.
The rising classical stars compete for the coveted NYMC title, the R180 000 prize money, and gold, silver and bronze medals in five instrument categories, namely piano, strings, woodwinds, brass and other orchestral instruments such as percussion, harp, etc.
Weien Amy and her brother Xizhi Aiden are no strangers to musical excellence – both have been members of the KZN Youth Orchestra, and last year Weien Amy was awarded her white Honours Blazer at Crawford International School.
