Choosing pure maths over maths lit
A young man's life is affected because he incorrectly chose to do pure maths in high school.

MY employer’s son was incorrectly advised, by his high school, that he needed to do pure maths to do a BCom Degree. He failed. He could have studied for a BCom Degree with an 80 per cent pass for maths literacy. Trying to change to maths literacy and to write maths literacy at the end of this year is impossible. His school says he cant write maths literacy there as he is changing his course and not sticking to pure maths.
He was hoping to keep his part-time job and study through a private maths teacher. A private college is forcing him to take a minimum of three subjects at a cost of R8000 for tuition before bus fare and living expenses. Can this boy never get away from pure maths? He got a distinction in History and Zulu. Must he join the ranks of the unemployed because he cannot try maths literacy?
