Cell phone thief arrested at Gateway

The thief was found with three cell phones stolen from concert patrons.

A MAN was arrested at Gateway’s Party with Poppy concert after stealing cell phones from party-goers. The incident occurred on Friday and the thief was found with three cell phones, all stolen from people at the concert. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, a police reservist who was in the crowd was alerted to the situation by one of the victims.

“The man came up to the police officer and told him his phone had been stolen. They identified the possible thief and when police confronted him, they asked the victim to dial his phone and his phone begun ringing in the thief’s pocket. Two other party-goers also came up to the police saying their phones had also been stolen.

“The suspect was taken to his car where both victims found their phones. The man was arrested and charged with theft. All the phones were returned to the owners. I urge residents and people attending events, wherever they may be, to be mindful of their belongings,” he said.
