Reality bites: Fruit and veg prices soar

Consumers are paying 18.7 per cent more for fruit and vegetables as the country’s food prices continue to soar.

SOUTH African consumers are forking out more for fruit and vegetables as the country’s food prices continue to soar. This is according to a study recently released by Stats SA’s consumer price index (CPI).

The study, which ‘unpacks’ the average South African household’s daily grocery basket, determined that fruit and vegetable costs have increased by 18.7 per cent since March last year.

Oils and fats have also increased exponentially by 18.1 per cent, followed by bread and cereals at 13.3 per cent and sugars and desserts by 11. 7 per cent.

According to the study, the continuing drought has lead to rapid food inflation first marked in November last year.

From November to March, the inflation has spiked from 4.8 per cent to 9.8 per cent, the study revealed.
