‘Age is what you make of it’, says Sunningdale octogenarian

Harry Eaton is officially the oldest person to complete ECR's Big Walk.

A GOOD place to start with Sunningdale resident, Harry Eaton, is to find out what hasn’t he done. The 88-year-old recently became the oldest participant to take part in East Coast Radio’s Big Walk. Not only is Eaton a third dan in karate, he still trains every day using weights and loves nothing better than walking with his best friend and pet, Penates.

Eaton recently took on the 20-kilometre walk to pay tribute to his wife, Lesley, who passed away last year and completed his task in under four hours.

Age is what you make it. My goal was to complete the 20-kilometre to pay honour to my wife. She was at the forefront of my mind and was motivating me all the way. I wasn’t there for the glory, I had set my mind to the task and I’m very proud to have completed it. I’ll definitely be back next year and I’m training for it already,” he said.

“I do enjoy my vodka,” he joked. “I have a very eclectic training regime but I feel that keeping active is important. My routine every morning is to wash the dishes, sweep the house and take a walk with Penates. He has been a great companion and he loves nothing better than walking every day. The minute I take his leash out, his tail wags and he almost knocks me over with excitement,” he said.
