Share the warmth, donate a jersey

Members of the community are encouraged to donate any pre-loved jerseys, hoodies, jackets or blankets in any size during the month of June.

THE Durban North-based organisation, Community UPlift, recently launched its annual Jersey June campaign. Founders of the public benefit organisation (PBO), Mark and Jackie Gaines, have appealed to the community to help them share the warmth this winter with Durban’s most needy communities.

“Members of the community are encouraged to donate any pre-loved jerseys, hoodies, jackets or blankets in any size, ranging from babies to adults, during the month of June,” said Jackie.

All of the collected items will be distributed amongst the Sinakekele Children’s Home in Verulam, the Youth for Christ Tennyson House in uMgeni and various homeless shelters in town.

Last year’s project was so well-received by the community that the PBO managed to collect 300 jerseys and countless other items.

“We are very excited about a bikers’ blanket rally to be hosted this June in aid of the event as well as a Durban North school, Northlands Girls High School, that has eagerly jumped on board with the collection. If everyone in Durban were to donate only one jersey, we can make a huge difference. It’s not simply about the giving of gifts, but rather the sharing of what we have with our fellow humans that will bring change in the world one day,” added Jackie.

All donations can be dropped off at the @Tap community centre and Coffee Corner (20 Mackeurtan Avenue) from Monday to Saturday, or alternatively at the Durban North Baptist Church office from Tuesday to Sunday.
