New cycle lane for uMhlanga

Over the last six years the eThekwini Municipality has spent more than R50-million on the NMT system.

GO! DURBAN’s new cycling route which links Durban to uMhlanga was recently completed, the City announced earlier today.

The route, which provides cyclists with the freedom to travel safely on a demarcated cycling lane, starts at Waterkant Road in Durban North and continues through to Fairway Drive and into Kentucky Drive. The route proceeds to Forest Drive leading to uMmhlanga central.

As part of the Go!Durban Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network’s (IRPTN) non-motorised transport system (NMT), the lane was built to address the ‘ever increasing motorised urban transport’. Over the last six years the eThekwini Municipality has spent more than R50-million on the project.

The routes will eventually link various nodes to the City, making it easier for people to go places without having to rely on buses, taxis and cars.

Itumeleng Masenya, the City’s climate change manager said the City is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and creating a more sustainable City.
