Coffee prices soar by 21 per cent

The price of one’s morning caffeine boost has increased significantly in the last three years.

COFFEE. It is lifeblood of many – the substance that jump-starts the morning for most people. However, some might think twice about indulging in their morning caffeine boost, as the price of coffee has increased by 21 per cent in the last three years, according to Statistics South Africa.

In August 2013, 250 grams of instant coffee would’ve set you back an average price of R28. By August 2016 coffee aficionados paid an average of R33.97.

Even the cost of ground coffee and coffee beans have soared. A 250 gram of beans or ground coffee has increased by 43 per cent. By August 2016 it cost R58.28.

Despite the gradual cost increases the International Coffee Organisation, estimates that nine billion kilograms of coffee was consumed in 2014 worldwide, while South Africa consumed around 31.5 million kilograms.
