Blooming orchids return to Durban North
In addition to catching a glimpse of these spotted beauties at the show, the public will also be able to enjoy potting demonstrations.
AVID orchid fans are in for a treat this November when these stunning plants are thrust into the spotlight at the annual Natal Orchid Society’s Spring Orchid Show.
All orchid lovers and keen gardeners are invited to visit the show where oncidiums, cattleyas, dendrobiums, vandas, and many more, will be on display.
According to Melanie van Greunen, vice-president of the Natal Orchid Society (NOS), more and more South African terrestrial orchids are being spotted at local shows and gardens.
“In the past people were not allowed to move or disturb these indigenous plants, but now thanks to hybridisation and seed collections, we are seeing more and more proudly South African flora. This, I believe is making a strong statement that will facilitate more awareness and encourage environmental protection of the beauties,” said the Durban North resident.
In addition to catching a glimpse of these spotted beauties, the public will also be able to enjoy potting demonstrations. A wide variety of orchid plants will also be on sale for those who want to add to (or start) their own collection. Light lunches and refreshments will be sold in the tea garden. Entrance costs R15 for adults and R10 for pensioners.
The show will take place on Saturday, 5 November from 10.15am to 4pm, and Sunday, 6 November from 9am to 3pm at the Parkhill Bowling Club, off Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Durban North.
Existing orchid-growers, and anyone interested in owning and nurturing these beautiful plants, are invited to attend the monthly meetings of the NOS. These are held at the Parkhill Bowling Club on the second Monday of every month at 6.30pm.
