FOR as long as she can remember, Erryn-Dehn Walters has always been a sporty person. But one sport in particular has been her life’s passion, football. The 18-year-old was recently selected for the KwaZulu-Natal U19 soccer team. She’s also represented the province in rugby and says her dream is to ply her trade in America.

“I’ve always had a passion for soccer. My dad was the one who got me involved in the sport and though I loved rugby, I was happier with the ball at my feet, than in my hand. My dad, Clint, is also my coach. He’s been my inspiration and keeps me motivated no matter what obstacle I have in front of me. I also play soccer with the boys and I think I gain respect from them when they see my skills and gift as I like to call it,” she said.

Walters who plays in the central midfield role said she will be playing Johannesburg later this month in an inter-provincial tournament.

“I’m really pleased to be part of the squad and it’s always an honour to represent the province. The team has good mixture of talent and experience and though we’ve had limited practice as a team, I’ve no doubt we will do well in the tournament. It all comes down to how the team can handle the pressure on the day,” she said.

The Northlands Girls’ High School pupil added her dream was to play football in America.

“I think the scope for women’s football is bigger in the USA. I’ve always admired their team and their support structures. I feel it would allow me to develop my game and help me grow as soccer player. I’m currently in my matric year and I’m looking for opportunities to go over to America to make my mark,” she said.
