‘Jaws of life’ used in Umhlanga Rocks Drive accident

The vehicles collided in a T-bone fashion.

A 35-year-old woman was seriously injured after a collision involving two vehicles on Umhlanga Rocks Drive earlier this evening. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, the accident occurred shortly after 7.30pm. Rescue personnel had to use the ‘Jaws of life’ to cut the driver out of the vehicle.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 as well as the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services were also involved in the rescue.

“The vehicles collided in a T-bone fashion leaving the driver of one of the vehicles entrapped in the crumpled wreck. The driver, a 35-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was cut free using the ‘jaws of life’.

“The driver of the second vehicle involved did not suffer any injury. Traffic was severely affected as part of the road way remained closed to traffic to allow emergency services space to work and Marshall Security were on hand to assist with traffic control,” he said.

Van Reene added the cause of the collision was unknown and will form subject of a police investigation.
