26 drunk drivers arrested in uMhlanga roadblock

Several vehicles were towed during the roadblock after drivers abandoned their vehicles.

DURBAN North SAPS and Metro Police held a roadblock on the M41 going towards uMhlanga on Friday night resulting in the arrest of 26 drunk drivers. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, several drivers also abandoned their vehicles, which were then towed to an impound.

The 26 drivers arrested on the night now means that in the last nine roadblocks held at night, 117 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged.

“A booze bus, where the driver’s blood samples were taken was also used. This was a very successful operation. As much as we’ve begun daytime operations in various entry points in and out of our area, we also want to concentrate on getting dangerous drivers off the road. Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. It is truly concerning how common place drunk driving is,” he said.

He added there would be more roadblocks through the course of the year.
