Man arrested after Gateway jewellery burglary

A smoke alarm which was triggered interrupted the suspects.

ONE person has been arrested after a burglary at a jewellery shop at Gateway Theatre of Shopping. The incident occurred on Thursday night at Arthur Kaplan Jewellers, a leading  luxury jewellery retailer. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, four suspects attempted to break into the shop using a crowbar.

“They tried to lift the glass entrance door using a crowbar which shattered at the bottom.  Two suspects then entered the store and smashed one of the glass display cases with the same crowbar and stole an undisclosed amount of watches. The smoke alarm was triggered causing the suspects to hastily leave the store as the smoke filled up the store. They then fled to an awaiting vehicle in the drop-off zone. The suspects had a problem with their vehicle which allowed mall security staff to nab one of the men,” he said.

The suspect is due to appear in court on Monday. This is the third incident at the mall this year which occurred after hours.

Footage of the aftermath of the robbery appeared on Twitter.
