Don’t send sexually explicit photos, videos warns DNUCT
With the use of social media more sexually-explicit content like this is being shared, often times, the consequences can be far-reaching.
THE sexually-explicit video showing a 14-year-old girl under the name Sesethu has been circulating on social media. The video shows the young girl strip off her clothes, while narrating what she does before masturbating. Northglen News recently spoke to the Durban North SAPS and Carol van Tonder of the Durban North/Umhlanga Crisis Team (DNUCT) who say the sharing of the video could lead to prosecution.
Van Tonder, a SAPS Victim support officer and police reservist said with the use of social media more sexually-explicit content like this is being shared, often times, the consequences can be far-reaching.
“There is a prevalence for younger girls to send naked pictures of themselves to boyfriends or to people they trust. There are many problems. No matter how much you trust your boyfriend, a nude photo or a video could come back to haunt you. There are so many consequences to sharing this kind of stuff. Someone could pass them on – either by circulating them or posting them onto a website or other social media groups,” she said.
Van Tonder urged parents to learn more about their children’s activities on social media.
“Parents have to monitor what their kids are doing online. They may see it as a violation of their privacy but you need to protect your child’s safety. It’s a criminal offence to be in possession of or even share videos and photos like this case. This is child pornography. My advice to young teens is to never send out material like this, ever,” she said.
