9 drunk drivers arrested in M4 roadblock

The operation was held by the Durban North SAPS and Metro Police.

DURBAN North SAPS and Metro Police held a roadblock on the M4 going towards uMhlanga on Thursday night resulting in the arrest of 9 drunk drivers. The drivers arrested on the night now means that in the last 11 roadblocks held at night, 136 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, it was brought to the attention of the station that a Facebook post warning of Thursday night’s operation had been uploaded on social media.

“This does not solve the problem, it lets people know about roadblocks and encourages some potentially dangerous impaired drivers to get behind the wheel which could lead to an accident or fatality. Social media can be a valuable asset but not when its used to undercut the law. People are taking drunk driving too lightly. It is a criminal act,” he said.

Deokaran warned of more roadblocks during the course of the year.

“Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. We cannot continue to ignore the problem and allow drunk drivers to take to the street,” he said.
