Drivers fined for using emergency lane illegally on M4

Police say they have received several complaints about ‘emergency lane hogs’.

DURBAN North SAPS has issued a warning about putting other motorists at risk by abusing the freeways’ emergency lanes. In peak traffic on Wednesday morning, Durban North SAPS held an operation targeting emergency ‘lane hoggers’ on the M4. Two motorists were fined in the latest operation which will be carried out weekly confirmed Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran.

“They will be held on different days on a weekly basis. We have joined forces with Metro Police to stamp this illegal behaviour out. We’ve definitely seen a spike in the number of motorists using the emergency lane. It really is quite shocking and alarming that people can make such erratic and reckless decisions that put other people’s lives in danger because they don’t want to be inconvenienced,” Deokaran said.

“We’ve had several complaints from motorists and residents in the area about this. Many people blame taxis but it is not true, we have a number of motorists ignoring the rule of law and illegally driving in the emergency lane,” he said.
