WATCH: Umhlanga Tourism warns of job scam
The desperate job seekers were promised a R17 500 per month salary.
UMHLANGA Tourism has warned residents of a scam targeting job seekers. The scam involves job seekers paying a false employment agency a fee as high as R8 000 to secure employment at the tourism offices.
The scam artists have advertised for several positions on free websites and have even asked those who have fallen victim to visit the Umhlanga Tourism Centre offices on Chartwell Drive. More than 20 people have so far have been scammed by the men who go under the names ‘Nicholas’ and ‘Bhengu’.
What’s more, the men have even drawn up on a contract stating the job seeker will be getting R17 500 per month.
Peter Rose, chairman of Umhlanga Tourism, said it was disheartening to see the scam artists targeting the most vulnerable.
“We know of at least four people who have paid money to the men who initially ask for R8 000 and then drop the price down to R2 000 if the victim is unable to pay the full amount. The numbers they listed on the contact list are fake as is their website. They have listed our physical address on Chartwell Drive and we’ve had a stream of disappointed people come through only to be told there are no such vacancies.
“It’s disgusting because these men are targeting the most vulnerable people in our society. Some victims have even borrowed the money. We do not use any employment agencies for employment at Umhlanga Tourism. If people feel they have been scammed I urge them to lay a charge of fraud with the police,” he said.
