Armed men storm Durban North home

The suspects pretended to be municipal workers from the electricity department.

FIVE men stormed a Cambridge Drive home just after midday on Friday. The suspects pretended to be workers from the municipality’s electricity department and managed to get the domestic worker to let them in. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the men were even dressed in blue overalls.

“The suspects told the domestic worker they were there to repair the electricity meter. They then stormed the house with handguns. They tied up the traumatised worker and kept asking where the safe was. One suspect stood watch over the worker while his accomplices ransacked the house.

“They made off with three TVs, an iPad, various cell phones and a safe from one of the rooms. They were seen fleeing in a Hyundai H100 bakkie with an unknown registration. I advise residents to warn those working for them about the dangers of opening up to strangers who claimed to be repairmen or municipal workers,” he said.

Tozi Mthethwa, eThekwini Metro spokesperson said municipal workers carrying specific ID card with their superior’s contact details on.

“I urge residents to ask for some form of identification for people claiming to be municipal employees. The ID card which we use has our logo, the relevant department and the contact details of one of the superiors,” she said.
