WATCH: Rare shark spotted in Japan

The rare shark was spotted off the coast of Chiba in Japan.

LARGE and eerily majestic, not many have seen or heard of the megamouth shark. The shark was only discovered 39 years ago with only 100 ever seen according to Discovery’s Sharkopedia.  The species is so elusive that scientists are yet to discover how many of them there are and where they live.

Footage of the incredible deepwater shark was recently filmed by Japanese national, Hiroyuki Arakawa, who uploaded it to his Facebook page.

Megamouths are able to grow up to 5.5 metres (18 feet) in length. It swims with its enormous mouth wide open, filtering water for plankton and jellyfish.
