WATCH: How the north celebrated Mandela Day
Here are some of the ways people gave their 67 minutes and more back to the community on Mandela Day.
WITH much of the world marking Nelson Mandela International Day by giving 67 minutes or more to a local cause, several organisations in the north Durban area also did their part to help make a difference to other residents and also in the lives of the less fortunate.
Every year on 18 July, South Africans and the global community honour South Africa’s late former President and international icon, Nelson Mandela. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed Mandela’s birthday, 18 July, as Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009.
- The Domino Foundation put together an action-packed challenge to serve the local community for 67 minutes. The Durban North Blood Donor Centre co-hosted a special blood drive on Mandela Day with The Sunflower Fund. They encouraged residents to dedicate their 67 minutes for Mandela Day to donating blood. The fund recruited donors who would be committed to, when matched with a patient, donating life-saving blood stem cells to someone suffering from Leukaemia or other blood related disorders.
Ward 110 councillor, Pete Graham, alongside members of Vumatel helped four local ladies from Mount Moriah de-weed and plant saplings from different plants to help with the vegetable garden. The garden helps service part of the community. Saplings from mango trees, lemon, litchi and paw paw trees were planted. Bags of maize, coriander, sugar beans and green beans seeds was also donated.
