Local belly dancers move in ‘hip’ circles
The trio will be performing at the Dance Collaboration 4 show which features a fusion of dance styles and a spectacular parade of costumes.
CONSIDERED one of the oldest known dances by some experts, the roots of belly dancing were planted in the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and northeastern Africa. The dance also features colourful costumes and besides being a challenging workout, it’s an art that can empower women. For North Durban residents, Shannon Naylor, Ria Rassool and Natalie Munisami, this much is true.
The trio will be showcasing their moves at a dance collaboration event on Saturday, 28 October. Rassool who has only been learning belly dancing for a year says the other dancers’.
“I just wanted a hobby, I’d seen a few YouTube clips and the music sounded great and I searched for a studio close to me and I found Belly Divas. Through dancing I’ve made new friends and they’ve all been amazing to me. They’ve all welcomed me in as one of the family and it creates an awesome environment to learn in,” she said.

For Naylor, who has been belly dancing for the past 10 years, the genre of belly dancing is always changing.
“You never stop learning, that’s why I love it so much. I started belly dancing with my mom and it’s been great to be able to share something I’m passionate about with her. The show is a great way for us to showcase our talent and hopefully inspire others who want to get involved in the genre. We’ve been practising extremely hard for this show and I can’t wait for the local community to come out and support us,” Naylor said.
