Former Virginia Prep principal dies

Ian McLeod became the first South African to referee in a FIFA World Cup when he officiated in the 1998 global showpiece in France.

FORMER Durban North resident and principal of Virginia Preparatory School, Ian McLeod, has died. The South African Football Association (Safa) confirmed the 63-year-old died on Thursday evening.

McLeod, who became the first South African to referee in a FIFA World Cup when he officiated in the 1998 global showpiece in France, was admitted to last week hospital after telling his wife that he was not feeling well.

In a statement, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) said they would observe a moment of silence for the long-serving referee.
