Illicit cigarettes worth R5-million seized in bust

During the operation 376 master cases of illicit cigarette were confiscated.

THE Hawks and members of the Crime Intelligence Unit arrested two men for dealing in illicit cigarettes. The two, Mohamed Osman (36) and Ismail Adam Bhiku (25) were operating in different areas in the country and they were arrested on 13 December.

The arrest, made in Port Shepstone, comes after a systematic investigation by organised Crime Hawks members and other role players confirmed Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo of the Hawks.

“During the operation 376 master cases of illicit cigarette with the street value of approximately R5 076 000 were confiscated. The Hawks also seized one rifle, a Mercedes Vito panel van and R13 000 in cash. Osman appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on 14 December and he was granted R7 500 bail. The case was postponed to 25 January 2018.

“Bhiku appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on 14 December and was remanded in custody. The case was adjourned to 19 December 2017 for bail application,” Mhlongo said.
