Level 4 weather warning issued for eThekwini

Disaster Management is on high alert with severe thunderstorms and heavy rains expected in most parts of eThekwini.

ETHEKWINI residents are being urged to be cautious following a Level 4 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for this evening (November 5).

The City said Disaster Management and Fire and Emergency Services teams have been placed on high alert until midnight.

Municipal spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said they are expecting severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall which could cause flooding of settlements, roads and bridges.

“They could also damage property and infrastructure, endanger lives through fast-flowing water, bring down trees that block roads, and create poor driving conditions,” said Mzila.

He urged residents to take precautions and for motorists who must travel to drive slowly and take extreme caution.

“Stay indoors and off the roads where possible,” said Mzila.

“Motorists who must travel are urged to drive slowly, keep a safe following distance, and never drive through flooded roads or low-lying bridges.”

Residents can report disaster-related matters on the Disaster Management WhatsApp Chatbot by saving 076 546 6883. The chatbot does not replace the emergency line.

For all life-threatening emergencies, residents must call the City’s Emergency Call Centre on 031 361 0000.
