LISTEN: Stellar IEB results for north Durban schools
Northglen News speaks to some of the top learners from Reddam College Umhlanga, Crawford College La Lucia and Our Lady of Fatima about their matric results.
THE Independent Examinations Board (IEB) pass rate (98.92 per cent) has gone up from last year, said the board’s CEO Anne Oberholzer.
A total of 11 514 full-time and 858 part-time candidates wrote the IEB examinations in October and November 2018.
Oberholzer said 90.65 per cent (compared to 88.50 per cent in 2017), achieved entry to degree study.
Key to the success of the pass rate was three north Durban schools, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School, Reddam College Umhlanga and Crawford College La Lucia.
Northglen News caught up with a number of the school’s top students to find out what was their key to success.
Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School
Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School achieved 100 per cent Bachelor Degree passes, 98 per cent scored above a C aggregate, 71 per cent above a B and 25 per cent achieved A aggregates.
Dux, Naomi Maujean scored 92 per cent and was placed in the top 5 per cent in the country. She scored 99 per cent for Mathematics and 89 per cent for Advanced Programme Maths. She was placed in the top 1 per cent in the country for Maths, Afrikaans and Accounting and obtained 8 subject As.
We spoke to Fatima’s Dux, Naomi Maujean and this is what she had to say:
Francesca Stavrinou (see gallery) also achieved 8 subject As. Iola Meyer, runner up to Dux, achieved an 87 per cent aggregate and 7 Subject As. As did Jodie Chambers and Savannah Brandsma.
The following learners from Our Lady of Fatima achieved in the top 1 per cent for their subjects: Claudia la Fleur for Business Studies; Kye Essers for Maths Lit and Iola Meyer and Hannah James for History.
Reddam House Umhlanga
Reddam House Umhlanga matriculants have maintained last year’s exceptional IEB NSC results obtaining a 100 per cent pass rate and a 100 per cent Bachelor’s Degree pass rate.
A total of eight students obtained A aggregates, while 21 students obtained a 70 per cent average or higher (from a class of 39).
Crawford College La Lucia
Crawford College La Lucia also produced some exceptional results with a number of learners achieving distinctions. Northglen News spoke to Shayur Ramdutt (eight distinctions), Asad Ameer (nine distinctions) and Darshan Ramphal (eight distinctions) to get their thoughts on their results.
Principal of the school, Cal Warwick said the students of Crawford College La Lucia have exceeded their limits and are now ready for the next chapter in their lives.
