uMhlanga resident stars in reality TV show

The Longest Date, which airs on SABC 3 takes 16 single South Africans on an epic journey to 'face their fears in gruelling challenges and ultimately a journey to find love and claim the grand prize of one hundred thousand rand.'

IF you are a fan of reality TV shows incorporating love and adventure, then the extreme adventure dating competition, The Longest Date, is definitely for you. That’s according to uMhlanga’s Ruan Scheepers, who is one of the contestants on the show.

The show, which airs on SABC 3 takes 16 single South Africans on an epic journey to ‘face their fears in gruelling challenges and ultimately a journey to find love and claim the grand prize of one hundred thousand rand.’ For the well-known vlogger, this was an opportunity not to be missed.

“Initially my friend sent me a screenshot of the show and I said she should enter. Around a week later I visited the show’s website to find out more and I thought, ‘what if I meet the love of my life, have an extreme adventure and win R100 000?’ I just felt it was an opportunity not to be missed. I’m 35 and I’m single and this was a way to put myself out there,” he enthused. “You will just have to tune into the show to find out whether I achieve any of that. So far the feedback from the audience and my friends and family has been amazing, so that’s really encouraging,” he said.

Scheepers was paired with Joedy Ramjith, a cake creator and designer from Johannesburg. The show takes place over 13 episodes and three of them have aired so far.

“We are the only gay couple on the show and Joedy has been great and so supportive with me, especially with the challenges,” he said.

Scheepers also praised the show for its ingenuity and approach.

“So often you see shows jet the contestants to exotic islands or to places overseas, this show is shot in Mpumalanga and showcases the beauty of South Africa. I think so often we want to travel out of the county but there’s so much to see and do right here in SA,” he said.

To find out if Scheepers finds love and wins the prize money, watch The Longest Date on SABC 3 on Monday Nights at 7.30pm. The show repeats on a Saturday and once an episode has aired, it is available on SABC’s YouTube account.
