Heavy rains cause havoc in Durban and surrounds

Several roads have also been affected with reports of flooding, mudslides and tree collapses affecting the N3, M13 and the M19.

EMERGENCY services are on high alert following torrential rains which caused large amounts of damage across Durban and its surrounds.

According to Rescue Care Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson, rescue personnel have responded to several incidents including two structural collapses in Overport in Malvern.

In the incident in Malvern, at least four people have been confirmed dead after a house collapse.

Several roads have also been affected with reports of flooding, mudslides and tree collapses affecting the N3, M13 and the M19.

Yesterday the eThekwini Municipality urged residents, particularly in low lying areas to be on high alert of localised flooding.

“The storm is expected to move in a Southerly direction concentrated along the western boundary of the province and move off into the sea. Given the rain, over the past two days, the ground is already saturated which could lead to increased riverine flow,” said City Manager Sipho Nzuza.

For emergencies and flooding, residents are urged to contact the Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000 or their local ward councillor.
