TWO police officers, one from Metro Police and one from the Phoenix SAPS, are facing charges of theft after allegedly stealing over R104 000 in casino chips from Sibaya Casino on Tuesday, 30 July at 2.30am
Spokesperson for SAPS, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the rogue officers were arrested.
“Durban North SAPS arrested two suspects for theft and possession of suspected stolen property. They were charged and appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today,” she said.
Spokesperson for Metro Police, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the Metro Police officer (36) was based at the Outer West unit.
“They attempted to cash the stolen casino chips at 6am on the same day. We are urging people to report police who commit criminal offences like this and instances where police ask for bribes,” he added.
Group manager for communications at Sun International, Zoleka Skweyiya confirmed that a number of value chips were stolen when a dealer at Sibaya Casino was closing one of the tables.
“Our security process worked as expected, the suspects have been identified and we are assisting SAPS in concluding their investigation, ” she said.

The arrest comes less than a week after three policemen and a policewoman stationed at Inanda SAPS were charged for kidnapping, extortion, pointing of a firearm, theft of a cell phone and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The officers kidnapped and severely assaulted two men on 24 July. The victims were taken to a truck yard on Peters Road where the rogue officers demanded R50 000.
Colonel Mbele could not confirm the outcome of today’s court proceedings.
