Councillor sees no progress at Firwood Road pool

The municipal pool was closed in July 2017 with the City hoping to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.

ANGER and frustration is deepening over the continued closure of Firwood Road swimming pool in Effingham.

The municipal pool was closed in July 2017 with the City hoping to attend to a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.

However, since the closure, residents and the local ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, have been left in the dark as to when the pool would be reopened.

In March this year, Maharajh held a public meeting with several affected residents, who felt a petition was the best way to get the City to respond to their questions about the pool’s lengthy closure.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the residents involved, the petition did little to move the City to respond. We are now approaching another summer season and residents of Avoca, Effingham, Greenwood Park and Redhill will have to go elsewhere to find a pool to swim in,” Maharajh explained. “Firwood Road pool has served the community for a number of years. It’s a great facility and seeing it empty makes me angry and frustrated. Residents are stuck with a construction site and a job that doesn’t seem to be moving towards completion.”

There has been no official response from the City.
