Homework centre to host Christmas party
Established earlier this year, the centre helps more than 30 children and caters for children from Grade R up to Grade 7 with all the subjects in the curriculum covered.
WITH Christmas around the corner, Khabazela Village resident, Ringi Madwe, is hoping to spread festive cheer by hosting a party for students of her homework centre.
Established earlier this year, the centre helps more than 30 children and caters for children from Grade R up to Grade 7 with all the subjects in the curriculum covered. The local resident works out of a local church and uses their premises on a daily basis to help children with their homework.
For Madwe, putting the needs of others first has always been her main priority and one of her main missions over this December period is to help give children from the underprivileged community a Christmas party to remember.

“We plan on hosting a Christmas party for the learners on 6 December. It’s really to reward the children for all their hard work this year. As the word has spread about the homework centre I’ve had more children come to me which is great to see. When I had the idea to help the children of Khabazela Village, what was lacking was a place helping the children after hours, especially with their homework. A local church was kind enough to let me use their premises and from there the class has grown.
“I felt there was a real need in the area because many of the children go to government schools where there are sometimes more than 40 children in a classroom and some of the learners aren’t able to follow everything and need help with the homework. At the end of the day, these youngsters are our future and I want to help them achieve their goals,” she said.
Khabazela Village community leader, Dumile Magaqa, said the idea to host a Christmas party was to reward the children.

“Being in an underprivileged area we don’t always have the means to support the children. We are appealing to the North Durban community, if they are willing, to help us with some items for the upcoming party. Arianne Hayes-Hill who runs a homework centre in the Malacca Road Informal Settlement has agreed to help us out which we are excited about,” he said.
