Over 350 vehicles stopped in M4 roadblock
Several fines were issued to motorists for contravening the Traffic Act while six drunken drivers were also arrested.

MORE than 350 vehicles were stopped in a roadblock on the M4 Ruth First Highway on Friday evening as part of the Safer Festive Season Operations.
The roadblock was conducted near the Virginia off-ramp to apprehend wanted criminals, drunk drivers, traffic violators and to seize illegal property.
Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said the roadblock was in conjunction with Metro Police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI).

“All in all it was a pretty successful roadblock in which 371 vehicles were stopped and searched. A total of six drunken drivers were arrested. Two vehicles stopped in the roadblock were found to be unroadworthy. There were 18 summons for drivers stopped at the roadblock both from Metro and RTI and fines were issued to those who were found contravening the Traffic Act.
“We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.
