uMhlanga charity celebrates Human Rights Day

The children were made aware of their Human Rights through games and team building.

ON Saturday Somerset Park- based organisation,  I Care staff successfully organised a fun day at the Meyrick Bennett Park for the children in the I Care Houses and Rehabilitation Centre. I Care, which aims to transform the lives of street children, has been operating for almost two decades.

I Care Marketing Manager, Gail Elson said the outing to the park has an educational purpose.
“The day was in aid of Human Rights Day and the children were made aware of their Human Rights. This was done in the form of chats, debates, games, team building and loads of fun with the interaction of the children and staff. They were treated to a delicious braai and treats throughout the day. Well done to everyone who played a part in this great day,” she added.

Some of I Care’s initiatives include offering skills training to former street children and raising awareness about street children.
“Our goal is to instill healthy life skills and a good work ethic in the children who go through the I Care system. Once the children have either completed their schooling or skills development, and are ready to work, we walk alongside them, guiding them through their new found independence,” said Elson.

She added that one way that the organisation aims to raise awareness is through talks given at schools.
“Our awareness team gives talks to children at schools warning them of the dangers of street life. Children often feel forced to leave home and are not made aware of the dangers of a seemingly ‘glamorous’ street life. The team is briefed by teachers and council children that struggle at school possibly because of a poor home environment,” she said.
