SPCA calls on community to sign petition against dog ‘hoarder’

21 dog skulls were removed from a bathroom containing the remains of countless dogs in varying stages of decomposition.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA is hoping to secure 10 000 signatures in a petition to end ongoing animal cruelty after a Clare Estate resident was found with 100 dead and dying dogs on her property last year in April. Despite this intervention, SPCA inspectors found the resident with 29 new animals on her property on 12 March this year, just over a month before a trial is set to begin in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 28 April.

“On this occasion we removed 17 adult dogs, nine newborn puppies, two cats and a chicken, which were living amid wall-to-wall faeces, dirt, debris and rotting dog corpses. There was no trace of drinkable water or food for the animals. Twenty one dog skulls were also removed from a bathroom containing the remains of countless dogs in varying stages of decomposition. New cruelty charges will be laid,” said marketing manager for the Durban & Coast SPCA, Tanya Fleischer.

She said the SPCA can’t enter the premises without a warrant and the petition serves to help the SPCA secure the warrant they need.

“We have to stop this permanently and the only way is through the courts. Please sign our petition now. With the trial due to start on 28 April , we don’t have much time. We want to deliver this petition to the magistrate with 10 000 signatures to get the message across that animal cruelty is not a ‘low level’ crime. We demand justice for the voiceless victims,” said Fleischer.
