Lockdown sees increase in illegal dumping on Ryde Place

Several bags of household rubbish had also been dumped on Ryde Place and along with 20 bags of garden refuse.

ILLEGAL dumping on Ryde Place and Malacca Road has continued despite the nationwide lockdown currently in effect.

Last week Northglen News was called to an illegal dumping scene on Ryde Place by Glenhills Ratepayers Association member, Robin Candy, who was shocked to find bags of garden refuse thrown along the sloped embankment on the road leading to the municipal dump.

Several bags of household rubbish had also been dumped on Ryde Place and close to around 20 bags of garden refuse.

In 2015 the City spent more than a million Rand to erect a 1.5 metre high concrete palisade fence (topped with barbed wire) – spanning the length of Malacca Road and Ryde Place.

It was thought at the time the fence would help with security and illegal dumping, however it has failed to hamper dumpers, who, instead of throwing their rubbish into the forest around the cemetery, now use the fence boundary to dump items at.

“Ryde Place and Malacca Road have long been hotspots for illegal dumping in the area. I know the municipality said it is not collecting blue bags and that garden drop off sites and landfills were closed but this is blatant disregard for the residents of Glenhills and the surrounds. This is totally selfish behaviour of some people who obviously didn’t want to keep their garden refuse in their yards until such a time as they were collected.

“In the past I’ve tracked down illegal dumpers to hold them accountable and around 80 per cent of the time, those taking part in this activity were people from out of the area. It’s clear in this case that several people were too lazy and there’s a culture of not caring for others that has encouraged this type of behaviour. Unfortunately we will now have to await council to come clean up the rubbish once the lockdown allows more movement,” he said.

Candy also condemned those dumping household refuse on Ryde Place as the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit (DSW) were still collecting household refuse.
