WATCH: Durban North gym joins nationwide protest

The nationwide protest was a call to government to consider reopening the facilities which have been closed for several months.

A DURBAN North gym joined hundreds of fitness enthusiasts and gym employees across the country in a silent protest against the closure of gyms.

The nationwide protest was a call to government to consider reopening the facilities which have been closed for several months.  Gyms are closed under the government’s lockdown regulations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Members of Fit24 Gym, based on Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington Drive), held up placards encouraging motorists driving past the silent protest to hoot in support on Wednesday afternoon.

Gert Roodt of the gym spoke to Northglen News about why they had joined the nationwide movement.

The demonstration ran from noon to 2pm and was headed by FitSA, the association of health and fitness clubs in the country.

FitSA spokesperson Grant Austin said the protest was to show solidarity with gym employees.

“The gym industry in South Africa employs around 29 000 people at approximately 1096 gyms. Their jobs are under enormous threat due to lockdown regulations. Gyms are an important part of the health of our nation.
