THE Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation hosts Dance Movement, a project which offers hip hop and contemporary dance classes to people living with disabilities.

The class welcomes people who are wheelchair-bound to join the weekly lessons, which kicked off on 16 February.

The free class, which is open to people of all ages, will be held every Tuesday at 29 Cobham Grove at the Whirling Wheels Club Disability Sports hall from 5.30pm -7pm.

Dance Movement artistic director Jarryd Watson said they have been running their special needs, disabled training and development lessons since 2016.

“The programme was created to include people living with disabilities, to get them involved in the arts and to start careers as well as to empower them through the arts. This includes training in arts and culture administration and management skills and performing arts for the stage,” he said.

“Arts disability is growing in this country and because dance and arts is universal, I created this inclusive programme for people living with disabilities to express themselves through the arts,” added Watson.

Nelisiwe Sibiya has been dancing with Dance Movement since 2018. Her dance career includes performances at the Playhouse theatre and the Durban Dance Movement festival.
