AN additional 27 metres of the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve’s new raised forest boardwalk was recently completed, bringing the total build to more than 100 metres in total.

The boardwalk now also boasts a newly seating area.

Made from recycled plastic, the raised, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk’s design will provide viewing decks overlooking the beach and lagoon and formalized access points from the boardwalk onto the beach.

Approved by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN EDTEA), the project’s initial funding of R345k was raised by community-minded stakeholders, businesses and contributors.

Local resident, Carmen Robb, who is a regular runner on the promenade said she’s loved the boardwalk extension.

“I run on the promenade at least twice a week and I sometimes take a stroll with my hubby on the extension and it’s just fantastic. Walking along the boardwalk is such a lovely experience, you hear the sea and the birds chirping, I find that quite therapeutic and extremely relaxing. When I run along the promenade it’s nice to know you can extend your run a little beyond the five kilometres and there’s almost like a little trail you can do at the very end of the promenade. I really hope more people get to experience it and support the project to see it fully extended,” she said.

In all, the boardwalk will extend for one kilometre.
