Police concerned about Virginia/Glenashley beach muggings

In one of the armed muggings, the suspect threatened to stab the victims if they didn't hand over their valuables.

DURBAN North SAPS have voiced their concern over two muggings on the stretch of beach between Virginia Beach and Glenashley Beach in the past two weeks.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the station, said the suspects in both armed muggings were looking for easy targets.

The first incident, which took place at about 14:00 more than a week ago, involved the robbery of a woman walking towards Virginia Beach.

“She was walking from The Promenade towards Virginia Beach when she noticed a man approaching from behind. He initially pretended to ask for a lighter but then pulled out a broken bottle which he threatened her with. He pointed the bottle at her ribs and demanded her belongings. He made off with two cellphones and her car keys and fled on foot. The victim then sought help from fishermen at Virginia Beach who contacted police.

“In the second incident, which followed a similar modus operandi, a couple were approached by two suspects who threatened to stab them. They were on the beach also near The Promenade. The suspect demanded their valuables and made off with their wedding rings and a gold chain to the value of R1-million. The suspects fled on foot. At this stage we are urging beachgoers and anyone walking that stretch to avoid, if possible, alone. We are currently working on leads to trace and arrest the suspects and ask the community to be vigilant. It is clear the suspects involved were looking for easy targets,” he said.
