Get into the swing of things for charity at Beachwood Country Club
The golf day takes place at Beachwood Country Club on February 24 at midday. The cost is R500 per player and includes a golf cart.
WHEN an uMhlanga mom saw an appeal from her son’s former educator on Facebook to assist him with a fundraising initiative, she didn’t think twice to jump at the opportunity.
“My son’s former educator, who swam the aQuelle Midmar Mile, posted an appeal on social media asking people to help him raise funds for The Cows,” said Belinda King.

King then approached the teacher and asked him if she could hold a golf day in support of his initiative, which he agreed to. The Cows are a group of people who raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa.
The Cows are the official sport fundraiser for CHOC and to date have raised more than R44 million for children living with cancer.
“I felt that I needed to do something to help and started doing my research,” she said.
She then met Iris Varty, the KwaZulu-Natal administrator for The Cows who brought her up to speed.
“I decided that a golf day would be a great fundraiser to hold for CHOC. If you don’t play golf, you can always come along and support by purchasing Cow caps and socks,” said King.
Varty, who is an avid cyclist, became affiliated with CHOC in 2010 .
“One day, while cycling, my daughter and I saw people cycling in cow gear. Curiosity got the better of me so I approached them and asked what it was all about,” said Varty.
She then started riding for The Cows in 2010 and has never looked back.
“It’s wonderful to meet new people like Belinda who want to get involved and raise funds for CHOC,” she said.
