67 Minutes for Durban North set to inspire community action
Volunteers are advised to wear comfortable clothes, closed shoes, hats, and sunscreen, and to bring water bottles.
DURBAN North residents are preparing to roll up their sleeves this Mandela Day when the Collective Durban North Association launches its ambitious ’67 Minutes for Durban North’ initiative, aimed at cleaning and beautifying public spaces while strengthening community ties.

The initiative on Friday, July 18, will see volunteers gather at Whynotte Park and Rinaldo Park, which will serve as base stations for activities stretching into surrounding streets and green spaces.
“We were deeply inspired by the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela and the belief in the power of our community working together. This year, we felt a calling to not just clean our spaces, but to truly foster deeper connections and ensure every area feels the warmth of our collective care,” said event organiser Sam Reddy.
Activities on the day will include litter collection, park clean-ups, and beautification projects. To keep spirits high, musicians and entertainers will perform at the parks, creating a festive atmosphere for volunteers.
As an extra incentive, every volunteer who fills a DSW garbage bag will receive a free boerewors roll, thanks to sponsorship from businesses like Bluff Meat Supply.
“The goal is to attract thousands of hours of heartfelt community care, involving residents of all ages, local schools, businesses, and community groups. It’s about building bridges across our neighbourhood,” said Reddy.
“Businesses are not just sponsors but partners in this community effort. Their involvement strengthens the bonds between commerce and community,” said Reddy.
Among the younger volunteers lending their support are Lyla Appasamy and Jada Buckley, both students and close friends who believe it’s important for young people to play a part.
“I enjoy working with my uncle on these projects, and since Jada and I are friends, this is one of the many things we do together,” said Lyla.
“Both of us are executives at school, and once that started it became a good feeling of being involved. It pushed us to get involved on a larger scale, as well as including others,” added Jada.
The event’s long-term vision is to create a culture of ongoing community involvement and pride in local public spaces.
Registration closes on Wednesday, July 16. Residents can sign up via the dedicated Mandela Day WhatsApp number at 065 500 9966.
