Ethelbert children tour Highway Mail office on Mandela Day

The group of youngsters, aged 12 to 18, enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Caxton offices and printing press. They discovered how newspapers come to life, from writing and layout to the thunderous hum of the printing machines.

IN the spirit of giving back on Mandela Day, Caxton Local Media Durban opened its doors to 10 children from the Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre, treating them to an unforgettable day of learning, laughter, and inspiration.

The youngsters, aged between 12 and 18, were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Caxton offices and printing press, where they learnt how newspapers are produced, from writing and design to the roar of the massive printing machines. Staff members took time to chat with the children about careers in media, sales, graphic design, journalism, and publishing, offering words of encouragement and insight into the world of local news.

In addition to the educational experience, the children were spoiled with a delicious lunch, gifts, and plenty of smiles and laughter, making the day both informative and memorable. Caxton Local Media Durban also contributed sponsorships and donations to support the centre’s ongoing work.

Highway Printers manager Marvin Gillingwater takes the children through the printing process.

“Today, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting a group of incredible teenagers from the Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre in honour of Mandela Day.

“As a local media house, it was both a privilege and a joy to open our doors and give them a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how we run our business — from editorial and design, to sales, printing, distribution and everything in between. We believe that every newspaper we produce is not just a product, but a reflection of the love we have for our community. It was important for us to share with them how all our departments work hand in hand to create something we are truly proud of,” said Nicole Bérichon, Caxton Business Manager.

Martie Janse van Rensburg of Highway Mail gifts the children goodie bags.

“On behalf of the Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre, we extend our sincere gratitude to Caxton Newspaper for so generously hosting our children in celebration of Mandela Day. This experience is not only educational and exciting, but also truly inspiring. Exposure to such environments has the power to spark new passions, awaken hidden talents, and plant the seeds of future dreams in our children’s hearts. Thank you for creating a space where hope and possibility could flourish. Your kindness and willingness to engage with our young people in such a meaningful way will not be forgotten. We look forward to more moments of connection and impact in the future,” said Beverly Munian, administrator for Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre.

Staff also gifted the children treats and hampers. Caxton Local Media thanks Smart Steps for their donation of school shoes, Boxer Superstores for their R3000 grocery voucher and Broadway Pharmacy for their hamper donation.
