The city is never short of entertainment for the entire family. Here's what's coming up this weekend.

This week, Durban comes alive with vibrant festivals and captivating shows, from a grand festival honouring Indian heritage with rich traditions and colorful festivities, to a breathtaking showcase featuring slam poetry that will leave you spellbound.

Bollywood song and dance

Chamak aur Dhamak, a dazzling new Bollywood show featuring Indian dance and live music, will light up the Playhouse Opera Theatre on October 11 with shows taking place at 14:00 and 18:00.
Show creator Pavishen Paideya infuses traditional heritage with contemporary brilliance, bringing show-goers live musical collaborations from Nawras Music Production, Shruti Teeluck, Brendan Nagan, Yovani Naidoo, and Kairav Mahabeer. Tickets are available through Webtickets. Ticket prices range from R120 to R180.

Horror Classic
There are only a few days left to catch The Rocky Horror Show at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in Durban. The curtains close on this one on October 12. Directed by the acclaimed Steven Stead, this bold and brilliant production features set design by multi-award-winning Greg King, with Tshepo Ncokoane starring as the legendary Frank N Furter. Performances are at 19:30 Tuesday to Saturday, 14:30 on Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday. Booking through Webtickets.

Honouring Indian heritage

The Red Mango Arts Festival takes place at Durban’s Sastri College from October 8 to 11. The event will honour heartfelt human stories by featuring two one-person shows: Roti Queen and Out of BoundsRoti Queen is a solo comedy by Shika Budhoo and directed by Dhaveshan Govender. Out of Bounds has become a South African classic, written and performed by festival director, Rajesh Gopie. Why Magic!, another one-hander production, also features on the line-up. Nothing like show business
Catch Lisa Bobbert at the Rhumbelow Theatre at Northlands Bowling Club as she brings her Queen of Musical Theatre’s spirit to the stage in a one-woman cabaret tribute. Ethel will have you singing Hello, Dolly! all the way home. From Gypsy to Annie Get Your Gun, songs that made Ethel Merman a household name, this show is a thrilling ride through the highs and lows of Merman’s remarkable life and career. The show takes place on Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11, at 19:30 and Sunday, October 12 at 18:30. Tickets priced at R200, R180 for pensioners and R160 for members are available via Webtickets.

Rhyming the rhyme
The 29th Poetry Africa Festival opens on Monday, October 6, at Seabrooke’s Theatre (Durban) and will run a free online programme alongside in-person events through to Saturday, October 11. Visitors can expect global dialogues, a celebration of New Coin’s 61st anniversary, rights and authorship sessions, and the live crowning of South Africa’s National Slam Poetry champion. Tickets for in-person events are available via Webtickets; online sessions are accessible for free.

Acts and stunts
The Pavilion Shopping Centre will host free live performances by The Cirk from October 10 to 12 at the cinema level. Witness exhilarating aerial stunts and mind-blowing acrobatics performed by world-class cirque artists. Limited seating, so be sure to arrive early to secure your spot. Enjoy a free workshop at 11:30.
