Durban North pet owners encouraged to attend wellness day
Free vaccinations and wellness checks offered at Durban North’s Pet Wellness Day.
THE Durban North Pet Wellness Day takes place at Whynotte Park on November 22 and 23, following a deeply personal experience with the loss of community member Ramona Reddy’s two beloved dogs, Miley and Lilly.

Reddy said the event was inspired after both pets had to be put down — one after suffering a stroke and the other from cancer.
“Losing them was devastating. It made me realise how important accessible pet healthcare and emotional support for families really are.”
The Pet Wellness Day, supported by Durban vet Ramona Rambally, councillor Heinz de Boer and the South African Mobile Veterinary Clinic, will provide free vaccinations, wellness checks, and educational talks about pet care, stress management, and rabies prevention.
The event is supported by local veterinarians, vet techs, and a mobile vet clinic, which will make regular visits to various Durban communities.
Raise rabies awareness
Rambally said it’s no secret that rabies cases have been on the rise in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with stray dogs and even mongoose posing potential risks.
“We’ve seen more animals wandering the streets — sometimes because gates are left open or the pet escapes. There are also pets who don’t leave their homes but it doesn’t mean they don’t need to be vaccinated. There are some owners who can’t afford vet care. This event is about protecting both pets and people,” she explained.
Additional, more specialised treatments will also be available at discounted rates.
“We encourage all pet owners to bring their pets for a vaccination and check-up. It could save their life,” said Reddy.
The event will run from 10:00 to 15:00 on both days, with plans to expand to other areas such as Blackburn, Malacca, and Virginia in the coming months.
