Umhlanga Tourism hosts first liquor licence workshop

Umhlanga Tourism hosted its first-ever liquor licence workshop to help local businesses understand regulations.

IN a proactive move to support local tourism businesses, Umhlanga Tourism recently hosted its first-ever liquor licence workshop, aimed at helping establishments better understand and comply with current liquor licensing regulations.

According to Umhlanga Tourism chairperson Naomi Crous, the event was organised in response to growing demand from members seeking clarity on the complex legislation surrounding liquor licensing.

“We recognised the value of bringing representatives from the Liquor Licensing Department to provide accurate information first-hand, explain the process clearly, and address individual queries,” said Crous.

The workshop at the Sharks Board venue brought together key industry stakeholders and local business owners.
The Economic Regulatory Authority played a central role, with Thandeka Mthembu leading the session and providing expert insights into licensing procedures and compliance requirements.

Crous explained that the main objectives were to ensure that tourism businesses are informed, compliant, and empowered to operate responsibly.

“Our goals were to provide accurate, up-to-date information on liquor licensing, offer members the opportunity to raise concerns and ask questions directly, and ensure that tourism businesses are well-informed and compliant,” she said.

“The engagement from attendees was excellent, and feedback has been very positive.

“Compliance is essential for tourism establishments not only with liquor licences but across all regulatory requirements. It ensures quality standards, safety, and responsible tourism practices,” said Crous.

Crous also expressed gratitude to the partners who helped make the event a success.

“Based on the response, we will encourage similar workshops within the greater eThekwini region,” she added.
