Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City “categorically rejects” any suggestion that it is not honouring its financial obligations to service providers.
“The City continues to pay all service providers where claims are legitimate and fully substantiated. Our commitment to timely payments remains unwavering,” said Sisilana.
According to the municipality, payment performance for the current financial year reflects a 98% success rate, with almost all creditors paid within the legislated 30-day period.
Sisilana said the remaining 2% of cases involve issues such as incomplete documentation or outstanding compliance queries, which must be resolved before payments are released.
“Delays caused by missing documentation or compliance issues are exceptions, and they ensure value for money and adherence to audit requirements,” she said.
The City emphasised that audit standards require verification of goods and services before any payment can be finalised.
Sisilana encouraged any contractors experiencing delays to engage directly with the relevant municipal departments.
In the meantime, it is believed that contractors took to social media to protest against non-payment. A video on TikTok seemingly shows workers chanting at the Florence Mkhize building in the CBD.
