Malawians await transport as support from Durban North continues
While volunteers continue supporting the Malawian community, urgent supplies and cash donations towards transport are still needed.
The humanitarian effort to support the Malawian community sheltering at the old drive-in site in Durban continues, with around 240 people currently wait to continue their journey to Musina, Limpopo.

Volunteer Cathryn Aylett confirmed that four buses are expected to arrive today (Thursday), bringing hope that many of those who have been stranded will finally be able to move on.
“We’ve been working alongside the Malawian representative, representatives from the City, as well as other aid organisations to do the best we possibly can for those waiting on the buses,” Aylett said.
As preparations for departure continue, the team has stopped distributing additional clothing because luggage space on the buses is extremely limited.
Despite the challenges, Aylett said the response from the local community has been overwhelming.
“This community has carried us through the most difficult times, and on behalf of the whole team I thank you most sincerely for your support. Without you, none of this would have been possible.”
While the operation is making progress, several essential supplies are still urgently needed, including 9kg gas refills, 10kg bags of rice, dishwashing liquid, hand wash, hand sanitiser, kitchen roll, garbage bags, tea, sugar, milk and a 50-litre or larger cooking pot.
Amid the ongoing effort, Aylett shared some of the moments that have kept volunteers motivated.
“Every single person on site is warm and fed. The sick babies and frail adults are receiving care and are already showing improvement. The mothers and babies have had shelter every night since they arrived.”
She thanked everyone who has donated blankets, food, groceries and other essentials.
“We spent some time around the fire with the men last night, and we were brought to tears by their gratitude and appreciation. We told them all about the incredible support from the community that has made all of this possible.”
One pressing concern remains, the supply of cooking gas. Although the team already has gas bottles, they need to be refilled. The cost is approximately R800, with R300 already pledged.
“If anyone feels moved to assist with the gas refill, please get in touch,” Aylett said.
She ended with a heartfelt message of thanks to the community: “Thank you for caring and for carrying us through this mission.”
Donations can be delivered to 186 Rinaldo Road, Glenhills. Those able to assist can also contact Cathryn Aylett on 078 059 3870.
