A viral TikTok video showing rats on Lagoon Drive in uMhlanga has sparked public concern - officials confirm the situation is being addressed.

The short clip, which has rapidly gained traction online, shows what appear to be rats moving quickly across a verge. Social media users expressed shock, disbelief and, for some, outright fear.

One resident commented, “What is that? Don’t tell me it’s rats the size of cats. I will have a heart attack on the spot.”

Others questioned how such an issue could occur in one of Durban’s most pristine and expensive areas, with one user saying, “I have never seen this in town but uMhlanga? Are those rats or something else?”

While some were stunned, others highlighted that poor waste disposal habits may be contributing to the problem.

“We are a dirty nation … As a nation, we contribute to mess and still expect to be cleaned up after,” one commenter wrote.

The uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UUIP) confirmed that the animals in the video are rats and said the situation is being managed.

“The UUIP is aware of reports of rodent activity along Lagoon Drive, and the matter has been formally reported to the relevant eThekwini Municipality department responsible for rodent control. The Municipality is currently assessing the situation and will take the necessary action,” said Jade Harding, head of precinct marketing and communications at the UUIP.

The video continues to circulate as residents await intervention.
