Popular market revived in Durban North

Durban North now has a vegetarian and vegan market open to the public.

IF you’re a lover of all things vegetarian and vegan, you’ll be happy to know that Durban North now has a vegetarian and vegan market situated in the premises of the Golden Hours Market in Uitsig Road.

After the closure of the Vegan and Craft Market, stallholder Amrith Budhram said other stallholders approached him and asked him to revive the market.

Last Saturday, the first Durban North Vegetarian and Vegan Food and Craft Market opened, seeing 46 stalls that included vegetarian and vegan dishes, arts and crafts, homeware, facial products, gems, Indian and Western cuisine, sauces, henna and more.

“I have experience at flea markets from running my own stall, Krishna’s Cuisine, but this is my first time managing a market,” he said.
Budhram said the previous market catered for a niche market so he decided to incorporate vegetarian cuisine into it, as well, to give customers more options.

“Meat products are still not permitted, and it will be kept that way, but there are people out there who don’t fancy meat but still love milk, cheese, butter and the like, and I felt it was important to include these options,” he added.

Budhram said he is one of those people and has been a vegetarian for 35 years.

“One day, when I was in my teens, I suddenly just didn’t feel comfortable with eating the bodies of other living beings so I stopped eating meat. My parents soon followed,” he said.

Speaking about the meat alternatives and substitutes which are now available on the market, Budhram said being vegetarian has become a lot easier.

“There are so many delicious recipes out there, as well, that you’re never short of inspiration. I have grown fond of the paneer parata and jackfruit pakaro, which my customers also love,” said Budhram.

“I would definitely like to see the market grow, and I welcome small business owners to contact me,” he said.

The market is opened every second Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 14:00 and is situated at the corner of Uitsig and Radar roads.
